At first I thought that was a supercharger mounted to the far corner of the engine. Then I realized it is a water pump. I said, "that's an odd water pump". I looked further to see it's a Merc powerhead! I'm gonna guess it's a Mark 30 powerhead. This must have been one of Keikhaefer's auto racing endeavours.

I have seen 44ci Mercs in the 750cc sports car class, practically a gokart.

I have a water pump and pulley off of a 6 cylinder Merc sports car conversion ... would work on a 4 cylinder like this one too. The pump on mine mounts where the electric starter would with a pulley mounted on the flywheel. driving it.

Make an offer on the pump and pulley if interested.

Mark 55 car

I always assumed this was an early Mark 55 powerhead as the photo I believe is from 1955.

In my area, in 1963, there was a guy that had a Mark 58 powerhead in a small foreign roadster. They ran club races at a small airport south of Minneapolis. To make a long story short, he kicked their butts so bad with it that it was outlawed after only one year of competition.

Sports Car Engine

That one's a Mark 55. There is one still around, runs in vintage racing, with a Mark 58.

The trick with these is not to stick the motor at part throttle. As the carbs are rotated 90 degrees, fuel distribution between the cylinder pairs is messed up at part throttle. Horizontal shaft carbs would help, yah?

I was once involved in a project where we installed a 4 carb 500cc C Koing in a 3/4 Midget.. We laid it flat and used a set 4 od KA7 tillitson carbs off of a 55H Merc. mounted on goose-necks. It was probably over-carborated at low RPM but it ran like a bear at top end. It wouldn't handle caution or parade laps. We gave up on the project and went to a Polaris snowmobile engine. At that time the 500cc Kawaski was the hot number.
