1910 Harley Davidson

So I have this project to start. So I grab my site and foundation plans and head out to the site to start digging. We stick the bucket in the ground and pull up what looks like a 1910-1912 Haley Davidson v twin. Does anyone here know anything about these? How many different motor bikes were in production back then? It has a few features on it I have not been able to find on any harleys I could find info on. Thanks

There were lots of bikes in production at that time. Motorcycles were new technology and everyone was trying to get in on it.

If it is a Harley it should be grey in color and look like a schwin bicycle.Serial # should be on fork hub. Engine # should be on engine INNER case half. Probably left side mid section. Hope this helps.

The gas tank should have 2 openings on top.One for gas,one for oil and they should be side by side. If there is 2 openings and they are in line you probably have a bike from around 1925. This bike is probably green with a hint of orange stripping.

Get me a serial number and I'll tell you exactly what it is. My neighbor owns a pretty successful Harley Shop, has had 25 bikes in Easy Riders, etc etc.

Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum

You might check with the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama http://barbermuseum.org/. They have the world's largest private collection of vintage racing motorcycles. Examples of Harleys & others from the days of the leather strap going from the motor to the rear wheel (who needs metal chains or driveshafts). They also have a pretty extensive research library. Mr. Barber built the track behind the museum, so he had a place to take the bikes in his collection for a spin. It's one of the best racetracks in the world. It's a great place to watch a race as well. Porsche rents it out about 200+ days a year for their driving school.

I even got to take a few laps on it for work.

Yes, it has a belt drive almost like a second rear rim. It looks like a bicycle. and does have the 2 caps on the gas tank. and a very crude springer front forks setup. It has probably been in the ground since the 50's. I took the front headlight off of it and ran it through the media blaster last night. It is an old gas lamp that was mounted on the fork by the tire. it sais Old sol Hawthorne, Bridgeport conn.
