  • Velocitek SC-1 GPS

anybody here ever heard or used one of these GPS units? Although spendy (Sorensen is selling them at a discount though), they look and sound like they are pretty darn great! I wonder how the start line timer works?

    Velocitek

I have used the Velocitek 2 times and was positively surprised. The Velocitek is great for getting real time speed. Importantly the numbers are large enough that they can easily be read while driving the boat. The unit also automatically stores your highest speed for recall after each run. In addition, there is a timer that can be used for clock starts....again with big numbers that can be read easily. If you buy the after market Speedplay software you can recall your entire run...including a map of the course you ran and the speed at any point on the course. This software I think costs $50-60.

The unit is well built and is waterproof. Hope this helps. David

You should have Bunker Hill tell you his story about a clock his dad put in his boat....

Now mind you, a 6'8" guy, running C stock runabout, you've seen Bunker...

He won something like 38 straight races before retiring...So, his dad puts this clock in his boat....When asked if the clock helped, he replies, yeah sure dad....

Dad did not know he placed a piece of tape over the dial.....

One of those great Hill team story moments in the pits waiting for the BSOB to cook.

Anyhow, this thing looks very interesting.

      And another add...

If you ever buy allot from West Marine, you can apply for a commercial user. I had to show them my contractors license. We buy many things used in the outdoor spaces we build from them....The thing is, it's like 20-40% off shelf pricing....And they don't just tell you abut this program, you need to ask about it and fill out an application. I think as a mechanic Darren you should be a shoe in to qualify if you have not already.

        Start line timer

You can set the start line timer for 3 minutes, just press the start mode when the 3 min gun fires. While it is in the count down mode the speed will be on the small display & the count down on the big display, at zero the speed goes to the big display.
There is one catch, when using the count down, the speed has to be set in knots. When you recall your top speed, it will be in knots.
When not using the count down you can set the speed in mph or kph.
There is also a recal for your fastest speed over 10 seconds, which I beleve is a better gage on how fast you are going, because the peak speed you may have only done it one time.
At speeds over 100 it reads in hole numbers & drops the tenths.
At Salton Sea, Wartinger, Dave Wilson (Sport C), and a Comp Jet used it.
With the dual lock strip you change from boat to boat, just like the old Keller "T" plates.

No RPMs, the unit was orginaly designed for sail boats, but there is a compass so you won't get lost.

Hey Daren, would you please STOP! Just what I needed..... Something else to spend money on.

Seriously, this thing looks good. Would be nice to be able to see boat speed while underway instead of waiting until I get back to the pits like I have to do with a Garmin GPS and then all I get is a max speed readout.

OMC FE/SE powerhead parts for sale. Kurcz ported block, Mod 50 pistons and cylinder head, exhaust, etc.

anything I can do to help!!!!

no, seriously, Wartinger told me about it, when he was here and says it is "the ticket" and if anyone knows Wart, you know he loves his electronic "gadgets" in the boat!!

although, reading the speed in the boat might be depressing................thinking you were actually going faster than had thought. The darn Garmin is not as accurate all the time and sometimes gives false readings, but this unit seems to be the "cats meow"!!!!! Knowing "actual" corner speed would be nice, without using one of those HI-TEC data loggers..........

now David, dig into the wallet and buy one!!!!!!!

but it is really amusing the first time you come in and check the gps. and it says you topped out at 107 mph

                          Velocitek in use

Here's a photo of the Velocitek in David Tenney's 125cc runabout at Devil's Lake, just after the first run. The unit had been configured with a PC computer to show only speed, the larger number shown is the peak speed in knots from the run, converts to 72.105 MPH. All of the wiring that you see is for the Mychron4 unit that is out of the picture to starboard; the Velocitek is self-contained, and runs on three AA batteries:
