Sea Duck Hunt

Attached is a pic of our first mornings haul out in Delaware on a free lance hunt on the ocean. Went last week with a big group of buddies. Cheap trip, and the seafood was good. Got all the oysters and clams on the half shell I could handle !

I recognize a few of those. It looks like you got a merganser, scaup, buffle head and some odd looking stuff. Are you going to use these for fertilizer or try to eat them?

I just had a couple of wood ducks for supper last night. They were great! I can't imagine roast scooter.

No bluebills, those are Atlantic brant geese, the black heads, some Bufflehead which were plentiful out there, and here for that matter, a couple drake old Squaw with super sprigs, and yes, you see one sawbill. The thing comitted sucucide... it came in from our flank low and kinda suprised us, only to discover it was a mergie, and hell no we didn't eat that thing !! We gave it to a local guy who had no clue........ Those are worse than eating carp !!

We hunted these on public land in a bay right in the Atlantic Ocean. Rhoboth Beach Delaware. It is not to far from Wilmington I think. My first salt water duck hunt. Hunter, my lab, sure got a workout for three days. Those Brant Geese are kinda dumb too. Nothing like a flock of 75 locking up into the decoys and we come up firing at 15 yards......... pure natural high right there, there is no drug on this planet that could compare to it.

We do a little duck hunting down here too. Hasn't been a real good year this year although we have killed quite a variety. The blackjacks (y'all call them bluebills, ringnecks, scaup......) aren't bad by the time they get to us after they've been through the Missouri corn fields and Arkansas rice fields.

We did pretty good on the mallards this year, ice up came early and the mallards poured in. One day Shaun, Patrick, Dad and I tore them up big time. Lots of work hunting on the ice, but it was worth it. Our season ended a month ago. Yours should just be getting midway. Nice Ring neck. I only got a couple blackjacks this year, missed the flights for some reason. We shoot mainly mallards and Wood ducks here in SW MI. Will have to come down and harrass Rotten Ralph and you and pull some good mallard hunts in the swamps !

A few gumbo ducks in there including Elvis " that's the merganser ". I never really liked " blackjacks" for eating too much. I nice redhead and some really nice grayducks.

Living in Georgia we don't get much of a migration. About 90% of we we get are resident woodies. I get an occasional teal, widgeon or mallard. On the coast you can get a few black ducks and bluebill. The coastal ducks are pretty bad eating though.

I can't resist a late call in from the Wild West of Region 10:

My cousin is a hunting menace. He taught me how to hunt & fish.
(He calls in the deer so close that he has used a Lugar .44 Magnum for buck hunting purposes -15 times, or a bow and arrow..
My intro to hunting was: "...just hike around a 2 mile perimeter with this shotgun, then run up the middle and keep your eyes open").
Out west here, we can only take one Buck per year. The late hunt is only 2 1/2 days.

I use a Browning single barrel 12 ga.with 3 1/2 inch Remington 00BK shells.
It works real nice, and doesn't waste any meat.

Do any of you guys use a shotgun for hunting deer, elk, or bear???

Just across the border from me in NY.....Shotgun/slug is mandatory......something to do with the range of a rifle/safety???

I carry my Grandads o'l double barrel Savage with a couple slugs....prob can't hit side of barn with it but.......

I've killed deer with shotgun, muzzleloader, and a 44 mag. Hand gun is my favorite as I like to walk and I'm lazy so it is easier to carry the short gun. Just have to practice. No time for archery.
