Here in NW Pa...they just jumped from $200/ton to $250...delivery to dealer cost/fuel went up.......Paid early at $200/ton and had to wait a month to pick up..."saw dust shortage due to build'n slump"?...stove run'n last couple nites-light SNOW!!!!
Used to blend 25-50% corn but too costly now...........
Have gas furnace and a gas wall heater for back-up....

Think'n about a tank-less on demand hot water heater........try'n to decide on Propane/gas/elec?????.....Might go with elec...1 for bathroom and 1 for kitchen/laundry...Cost a little high but gott'a be better than heat'n water 24/7 ???

      Tankless water heaters

Don't know about in PA, or Mo. but in this nazi state, I as a contractor cannot even buy a Renai or other brand tankless heater until I take a week long certification course on how to use one and install it correctly. I know it's all about liabilities, and where to place the vent, and, they come with instructions...So i guess the course takes the place of people who can't read....Anyhow, hiring a contractor costs $2500, =,+ for the first one, and we will need 2, placing the price at $4,300. We would save about $200 a year on energy. So, in 21 years, right about the time they would need replacing, they would have paid for themselves assuming natural gas stays the same cost, which it won't....

My son in law lives in eastern In. he buys their pellets by the pallet from a wholesaler and saves 1/2 off retail of the 50? pound bags.

            Up THere

I use a wood pellet stove to heat the boat shop. I buy them by the ton (pallet) and go through about two and half ton a winter. Last season they were right around $200 a ton. I hate to see the price of them this year. We get a break by the ton, but not much of one anymore. Like 10 cents a bag off or something. I get most of mine from Tractor Supply Stores. Menards also carries them, and they are cheaper by a little bit, but they don't burn as long.

We mixed corn in a year or two ago, burns hotter than hell, but at over $5.00 a bag it is not cost effective. We used Cherry pits one year to mix in, again, burns hot, but now they too are way up there.

What irks me, is when we first got the pellet stove, a ton of pellets was right around $100.00 a ton............ then they caught on......... pretty soon they are going to be trading futures on the stock market for pellets and drive it up like gas prices were !

Any ever use a waste oil heater?

Whe n our shop was in illinois, as we drained the oils from the truck and tractor fleet through the working year, we were able to gleen the right amount of oil needed for a waste oil heater which heated the shop in winter. Great way to use what you normally pay to dispose of and not use gas or electric.

Unfortunately, they are not allowed for use in Ca.

              Kev:

Maybe my solution for the tankless would be to visit back home and plan to buy a couple, then just put them in...Like we have to do with anything else that works, like solvents, lawn chemicals and so fourth....

Waste oil :there are many in use around here. Some shops that generate more waste oil than they use now have people buying the stuff from them instead of paying to get rid of it. there are some that give it away. but their lists tend to be much longer than the supply they have.
tank less: They still are not cheap. prices at Lowe's range from $214 for the smallest electric (i don't think you will be taking hot showers with this one but OK for a 1/2 bath) to about $1100 for a gas one that will heat up to 6.4 gal/min. It is supposed to be able to meet 2 hot water needs at once
$714 will get you on that only heats if there is water running through it. no pilot light. no electricity. heats up to 4.3 gal/min.
$448 electric 2.6 gal/min but it pulls 80 amps in use here in the land of expensive electricity it just does not seem like a viable option. the ridiculous credits for heating with electricity (the use more we will charge you less "conservation" plan) is being phased out from many providers due to caps on rates

dave you could go to makeyourownpellets.com and buy your very own pellet mill spend $3000 to 6000 and then make "free"(the ads wording not mine) pellets.

most of the people with corn burners around here have bought an old gravity flow wagon. and then buy corn directly from farmers.

The $214 unit we an buy, they are 120V, and we use them for people who have us build outdoor kitchens. Its pretty much all you need to clean meat, and only fire up when you crack the hot water.

For the prices you are showing, it's well worth saving some money, assuming we have work by then, and grabbing a couple of the ones listed and bringing them home.

Far as electric/gas goes....CA was hit by the Enron garbage hardest...So, thus producing my first rant and rage over cost of living......

In our 1500 Sf bugalow in Aurora, IL, we had an old inefficient as heck Octypus heater...We used 200% more gas, and electric was about equal to here, as it had no insulation.
Our bill here is 236% more for half the power used....

Since we pay the sunshine tax, I'm going solar next year. For a 3 KW roof power plant, that will generate credits by day, and draws by night, it will costs $9,000 and produce $12 per month energy bills....
They now dance around $400/mo, give or take....

Here they combine both gas and electric. I'll dig out a bill later, my desk is a mess right now, but last I saw one, electric was .29 per killowatt. Cheap at twice the price.....

wow it must just be the north-west that has cheap hydro power. at least thats what we hear here. Plus i saw something on electric cars in northern Cal. the guy claimed he charges his car for something like 1.48 with 4 cent per kilo electricity. I know the feeling of no work. but right now I CAN'T work GRRRR.

That would be worth the drive to pick up 5ton or so.
