  • Cell Phone Use in New York While Driving

JUST FYI FOR ALL OF YOU ENTERING THE STATE OF NEW YORK FOR THE STOCK/MOD NATIONALS, NEW LAW PASSED JULY 1ST...don't get a ticket.

    Hands-Free Laws by State
On July 1, hands-free laws became effective in both California and Washington, making a total of six states (and the district of Washington DC) with enforceable hands-free laws. In addition, many states have enacted similar laws in some districts and some states have active hands-free legislation. Here's how it breaks down by state:

States With Enacted Laws: California, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Utah, Washington D.C. and Washington

States With Enacted Laws by Jurisdiction (most of these states also have active state-wide legislation): Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio and Pennsylvania

States With Active Legislation: Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont and Wisconsin

Not a bad idea. I work on the road ( Pennsylvania ) and have seen many
things over the past 30yrs. The other day, a guy cut into my lane while
he was texting with his left hand. I saw this very clearly. This is not the
first time I have seen this. Cell phones to me are a blessing and a curse.
I am a Lineman and safety is a major concern in our industry. Some laws
have merit, others, that is a debate for another forum.

    Safety First,

... pending legislation in MD. Maryland continues to vote down all attempts to limit cell phone use while driving or texting while driving. I think our Delegates and Senators don't want their kids to get tickets.

The worst I have seen is a woman putting on make up and reading while also attempting to drive 80 mph. She is no longer with us. Unfortunately she hurt someone else while proving Darwin right.

When I am sitting at traffic lights, I take a poll, I see most women holding the cell phone to their earn as they drive throught the intersection. Once in a while I see a guy.

On the freeways when I come up behind a car driving very slowly plugging one lane, as I pull buy, it is a woman. Once in a while it is a guy. But the majority of the time it is a woman.

Now before some of you yell male chauvinist, re-read what I said, sepecially the part that says, "take a poll", I am just taking the poll, I am not forcing the women to talk and drive.

Same thing in grocery stores, I am glad I do not have to pay their phone bills.

I am waiting for the day when I see a woman talking on the cell phone while runniing an elimination heat.

Take care and have a great nationals.

            juat cell phones?

Where were these concerned for safety legislators during the heyday of CB radio? Every-fricking-body had a mic in their face, and the roadway looked like a mini-forest of wiggly radio antennas. I was guilty, and I had a single sideband radio - mic in one paw and the other hand diddling with the adjustment knob to fine tune the channel. Maybe we were more skilled in those days? Like we could change 8-track tapes, adjust the heat or A/C, yak on the CB, and still drive!

#1 on my list of wild driving stunts - a lady at a stoplight with an eyelash curler clamped to her eyelashes. Oops. light goes green, and she switches hands holding the curler gizmo so she can shift gears as she rockets across a four lane highway. I'm thinking one good pothole bump and she'll either rip her eyelid off or jam the metal curler thingy in her eye = ouch.
