  • Farewell Terry Witham

Terry Witham, Mr. 5-H, passed away last Monday in Indianapolis. Terry was a life-long boat racer who started out in J-Mod in the 1970's, eventually moved on to A Mod and then to C and, as of late, D Mod. Terry was one of the hardest and best drivers I have ever seen race in the very competitive D Mod Hydro class. He was one of the few who might be able to out-drive the likes of Palmquist or VanOver, if he had an opportunity to do so. He was also one of the few people who could consistently beat C Mod Runabout Yamato entries with a Mercury 30H.

Terry was also very concerned about the sport, serving in varying official capacities including as a Modified Outboard Commissioner for several years.

Terry and his dad, Lou, could be seen at nearly every IOA race since the mid 1970's. His mom, Darlene, would also attend the races very often, too. Terry was also one of the few people who was privileged enough to race engines built by Harry Brinkman. Harry and Lou were chief mechanic and crew chief, respectively, of Team "All Reddy Gone".

Terry took a small hiatus from racing a few years ago but came back to take over at the helm of the Heritage Days Regatta in Huntington, Indiana, as Race Director and did a spectacular job of running that race in 2007.

His funeral was Saturday, April 5. He was only 42. Please pray for Darlene and Lou.

Terry was also a good friend. I will miss him. Ed Hearn.

    Sad, sad, news.........

I found out about Terry's passing Saturday and was deeply saddened. He was a great competitor and as far as I could tell a great guy all the way around. Me being an AOF racer I seldom saw Terry. I first met him in person (I had talked to him on the phone previously when he was getting up an order of C Merc rings from Hastings) at the 1991 APBA Nationals at Mountain Home, AR. I saw that he was a heck of a driver at that race! The only time that I raced with Terry was in EMH (44) at the 1995 AOF Nationals in St. Louis. I ran a 2nd (1st heat) and a 3rd (2nd heat) to Terry's 3rd (1st heat) and 1st (2nd heat). That race is also where I met Terry's Dad. He's a great guy! I really like him.

Lou, if you see this my prayers are with you, your family, and most especially Terry.

        Sad news

I raced with Terry back in '93 at the "Thunder on the Wabash" race in Indiana. I'll never forget seeing him fly past me in that beautiful Phoenix flame hydro. (I have it on VHS)
Terry was a real asset to Modified racing, and a great guy. He will be missed.

I was one of those guys that Terry beat in his Merc. I First raced him in Dayton in 91. I went with Bob Goller and George Luce. Well I thought I was fast in C Mod until Terry Blew past me like a rocket ship. I really enjoyed watching him in his DMH, you always new he was coming out of that first turn in the top 2. rest in peace

I had talked to Terry a little over a month ago on the phone, he wanted me to send him some shear pins. We talked at least 30 minutes and he seemed excited about the coming race season. If you have ever raced against Terry you have been beat by Terry at one time or another, he was one of the top drivers in the country with some of the best equipment. The McAfee family will be thinking of Lou and the Witham family in their time of sorrow.

Terry was one hell of a driver and a good guy.

Never saw him without a smile on his face...and he always had time to shoot the breeze at a race. A truly passionate boat racer.

              It's a terrible loss.

My condolences to the Witham family.

Terry will be sorely misssed. His equipment was always top notch and he was one nice person. He always was one great competitor. Sympathy to the family.

I remember racing against Terry in Indiana a couple of times, him in his old-style DeSilva C runabout and mod Mercury power and me in my Yamato C stock runabout. Needless to say it wasn't much of a contest. But what a driver he was. Perfect, clean starts, taking corners faster than anyone, excellent boat control, a real pleasure to watch and learn from. He was a fine man and I'm very sorry he's gone. Lou, my prayers are with you.
