Terry Witham, Mr. 5-H, passed away last Monday in Indianapolis. Terry was a life-long boat racer who started out in J-Mod in the 1970's, eventually moved on to A Mod and then to C and, as of late, D Mod. Terry was one of the hardest and best drivers I have ever seen race in the very competitive D Mod Hydro class. He was one of the few who might be able to out-drive the likes of Palmquist or VanOver, if he had an opportunity to do so. He was also one of the few people who could consistently beat C Mod Runabout Yamato entries with a Mercury 30H.
Terry was also very concerned about the sport, serving in varying official capacities including as a Modified Outboard Commissioner for several years.
Terry and his dad, Lou, could be seen at nearly every IOA race since the mid 1970's. His mom, Darlene, would also attend the races very often, too. Terry was also one of the few people who was privileged enough to race engines built by Harry Brinkman. Harry and Lou were chief mechanic and crew chief, respectively, of Team "All Reddy Gone".
Terry took a small hiatus from racing a few years ago but came back to take over at the helm of the Heritage Days Regatta in Huntington, Indiana, as Race Director and did a spectacular job of running that race in 2007.
His funeral was Saturday, April 5. He was only 42. Please pray for Darlene and Lou.
Terry was also a good friend. I will miss him. Ed Hearn.
