A boat race with such large crowds that the competitors couldn't even get to the water. Perhaps this was due to the premier class (in this case D-Mod) was ran at 1:00 sharp and the spectators knew when to show up.

19 boats competed in the race. Below is a link to a video of the start.
It is a 48 mile course. 12 miles downriver then back twice. For the boatnik weekend approximately 100,000 people come to town for the festivities. Spectators line the bank for the entire racecourse to watch the race. It is in the radio so everyone can hear where the boats are. With the stacks you can hear the boats for miles before they actually show up.
If anyone is interested in what we do here and would like more information, visit the website, call, or email me.

Hey Mathew, as I have been a spectator at boatnik since the early 80's, I read you post of 19 boats started and finished, I have missed the last two boatnics. How many have started and finished in 2015 and 2016?

There were 18 and 19 entrants, Unsure about the finishers. If you got to the cal-ore website and click on boatnik there will be a list of the results from 1959 to present. It also include the number of entrants for the past few year.
