        Crazy things

I remember living out in Redlands, Ca and going down to Long Beach Marine Stadium in the late 60's and early 70's watching the NDBA finals. Larry Schwabanland the Bale Bro. Dwight and Mac, Ray Casselli and others put on one whale of a show.

Dwight set a record of over 196mph in the liquid quarter mile, with no capsule and if fact it went over 200mph later, still without a capsule. They eventually went to parachutes trying to slow the driver down before he hit the water, but even that was not the answer. You might remember Dean Wilson used to drive F Hydro for Larry Latta and he also used a parachute.

Crazy part is Dwight died in a boating accident later in Northern Ca.....in a rubber raft in a canal swollen with rain water and dumped him over.

Nothing more frightening than to stand along the beach, hear the first crack of the throttle, listening to the blower kick in and watch a rocket go by you at the finish line. Holy Buckets does not even begin to tell you what the hair on your neck and arms feel like.

If you remember Eddie Hill was the fastest man on both water and asphalt at about the same time. If memory serves me he set the world record at Firebird going upside down as he crossed the finish line. The owner of the boat told Eddie they were done racing, he was afraid Eddie would get killed racing the boat. He then went on to race the Penzoil TF car in NHRA.

Now of course they are using the capsules with full time air and many unreal crashes the survival rates have increased.

        Ray

I will quote Benny Robertson on driving in a straight line- "Now who would have thought of that?"

Is it really better than watching a three boat Formula A race?
