Once the race committee realized that resorting to one heat racing still would not complete the schedule by nightfall, drivers were required to race two to a boat. “It was the fairest thing we could think of”, said the Race Director. “After all, if folks spend hundreds of dollars and hours driving to a race they deserve a full three laps, even if it’s not in their own boats. The committee discussed drivers racing one and a half laps in their own boats in order to shorten the schedule, but we couldn’t agree about how the half lap would work. It’s kind of like digging half a hole or having half a brain, you know what I mean?”
