  • Size Matters

A photographer/friend/co-worker loaned me a lens to shoot the inboards at Cambridge, Maryland July 29th and 30th. Past experience taught me that my lenses were not big enough to shoot the kind of pictures I wanted from shore.

    Needless to say, size matters.

This was shot with my Nikon D70 equipped with a Nikon 400 mm 2.8 lens and a 2x converter.

    Scroll down for another photo.

No, this one's not a VR model, if that's what you mean. He normally uses it to shoot wildlife, mostly birds. Nothing doing 70-120 MPH.

I asked how much it would cost me, in case it got stolen, and he told me. After that the lens didn't leave my sight.

              And then add...

              Dan,

And then add two converters, a 1.4x and a 2x.

And then add a top-of-the-line tripod that has motion so fluid it's unlike anything I've used before.

I'm waiting for the owner to come in this morning so I can return it all. >sniff<

And then you really need to have of the pro digital cameras. Bill Osborne, a guy who actually makes money shooting boat racing, has a rig that can fire a burst of almost 30 frames before it loads up. That'll run you 6 figures.

A guy like him and F. Pierce Williams will have two or three of these rigs set up and ready to shoot.
