  • Newberg 2012: Welcome to the Jungle

Well, we all survived Newberg, one way or another.

A friend of mine who is the PR guy for one of the H1 teams and lives in Portland showed up at our race, took a look at our course and commented, "it's like the outboard version of the Detroit River." And he's right: a generous, sweeping first turn and a ridiculous hairpin turn 2.

Turn 2 makes for some horriffic water, and some awesome photography opportunities. Here's a sampling of what both Christine and I were able to shoot this last weekend. Enjoy!

        Unbelieveable...
And I thought your Moses Lake race looked "airy".

          Holy crap, Pat.

Is that a 1 pin turn or what? Those pix are ridiculous. Never seen that many stock boats that out of control.

              Newburg

              Pat,
Great pictures, I see its still as rough as when I last raced there and went out in my 1100. And the water is colder than cold!! The only place I raced at that it took 3 guys to hold an A stock hydro before the gun due to the strong current.
Beautiful place to race though and wonderful group that puts the race on!!

This was the 64th annual Boat Race @ Newberg, Or. on the Mighty Willamette River.
I have been attending as far back as 1970.
Always a great get together around the bon fire, with a few old hulls flaming on and turning to coals.
It is usually rough, but this year is the roughest I have ever seen.
Do to the high water level the current was much stronger. This made it extremely rough.
It also made for some of the wildest and exciting racing for all that watched.
With tight two pin turns and a sweeping right hand turn, dog leg down the back stretch, there was not a dull moment.
If you can make it around Newberg, you can make it anywhere.
There were drivers that came from as far as LA. Cal.
Newberg, TO TOUGH TO TAME !!!
