  • Extreme Close-up Contest 2009

Talladega is on hold from the #39 backwards flip/accident with 5 laps to go...

The 2009 boat racing season is over. Let the foto fun begin.

Name the person in this extreme close-up. I'll post the full size photo once he is named.

As always, relatives, teammates, and in this case close buddies are ineligible to participate.

      Earl Slam Dunks It

Earl slam dunks it, it's the one and only Billy Simmons.

Normally my "full photo" is more of a full photo. But this is a special lens I borrowed from work to shoot turn 1 at Lock Haven, PA while sitting on the river bank.

When boat racing is on hold I look for something else interesting. Billy was on the shore gazing at the water...

          Elbow Room

In almost every photo I have of this driver, his elbow is in the same exact position, making it part of his distinctive driving style.

Name the driver. Bonus point if you can give the racing number of the boat he was driving. Another bonus point if you know the boat name.

The driver has been identified -- only scroll down to the next post if you've given up and want to know the answer...

              Elbow Room, Part 2

              Dylan's got it -- Dave Bennett, 10 F.

Millions of Hydroracer.net fans just went, "Huh? How did Dylan know that?" Tell us -- was it the black hull, the tip of the white F showing, the unique front helmet design, or his distinctive elbow that led you to the answer?

Full photo to be posted this evening.

                  More Elbow Room

The full photo, from Lock Haven, PA 2009.

My second choice was to show just the two fins, just to make it interesting. But I figured if I showed his engine cover that would be a dead giveaway.

                  ********

Next week I'm considering showing just an engine to see how good you motorheads are at matching it to its owner. Perhaps something in the mod category...

                    Calling All Motorheads!

Ok, for all you motorheads out there, here's your chance. Identify the owner/driver by just the engine to win. I'm >>assuming<< the owner and the driver in this photo are the same person.

Bonus point if you can provide the boat number. Another bonus point if you can provide the boat brand/builder.

The full photo will be posted after the driver is identified.

As always, relatives and team mates of this driver are ineligible to participate.

                        Kevin Fitzgerald

You've got it! At least by all available information you've got the right answer. And there's an Arltralite decal on the side of the boat.

When I went to verify that this was the driver via APBA's records Kevin wasn't listed as having raced FEH/850CCMH at Lambertville, NJ this year. Anyone want to explain why? (I have a theory...)

I don't have the full photo prepped for posting yet, but I'll try to post it later tonight.

He was there with the boat - we talked to him for a while.
