  • The Family Aspect of Boat Racing

Photo threads with themes are in!!!

We often mention that the family aspect of boat racing is one of the major draws of the sport. Dads, moms, sons, and daughters all have a place. (I'll acknowledge them, but let's leave the family pets out of this thread -- sorry Rocky).

Show us your photos from any decade of any combination of parent and child or grandparent and grandchild interacting at a boat race. Racing shots or pit shots.

Bonus points if it's a photo of a father/mother racing against their son/daughter.

Start digging for that special photo!!!

I'll start the thread with two photos of a little-known father-son team taken at Lock Haven, PA in 2007.

    Salt Springs, Copperopolis

#1) Reese, Ron Hills grand daughter getting ready for the 5th generation of Hills in boat racing, Long Beach Marine Stadium, 2008

#2) KT, coming in from Heat 2 of AXS hydro. She worked hard to hold off Steve Wilde, and worked harder and got around Tony Lombardo for the win.

#3) Jeff Akers, his dad, and I think Garland Powell, under his tarp next to Jeff's ICBM boat. Nothing prettier on the water in flight for sure!. Garland is one of the many that came to the rescue when KT's motor burst into flames to get it out.

The idea is to show non-racers who visit Hydroracer that boat racing is a "family affair" for many. If you consider them "family", then who am I to argue? I'm only asking that they be human. I'll let someone else start the "Pit Pets" photo thread.

So does boat racing, which is equally as important.

                  Boat racing, the future.....

Over the last 100 years behind the wheel, we have seen wars, conflicts, depression, recession, resistance, and revolutions. We've watched a thousand hand wringing pundits disappear in our rooster tail. But every time, this sport has come out stronger than ever before because plywood and carbon fiber put distance between you and whatever the world can throw at you. Family, spray and speed outlast hard times. And the scream of an engine drown out the blah blah blah on the nightly news. If 100 years it has proved one thing, it's that fear sucks and it does not last long, so screw it, lets race......

My Mother, Nancy (Mamma C) was scoring for her Dad Lee Worley when My dad met her at a boat race. I am a 2nd generation of Cafarelli racer and 3rd Generation Worley. Lee Worley was my Grandfather.

Legend has it my Grandfather did not like my Dad because he was working the judges stand with my Mom A LOT. What driver would want to work EVERY set but the one he was racing in? The answer John Cafarelli, my Dad. He was working on starting a family at the races!

The list of great families I have been involved with since I was a little boy is too long to list. I have been involved with everything from Little league to BMX racing to slot cars and the best families end up at the lake.

                      Happy Holidays

This is the race Jason McBain tried to kill my mother on the race track. Jason thought my Mom was me and smashed into her trying to spin her out. In true Cafarelli form she beat Jason to the line and then denied him brownies!

Sorry Jason. The truth must be told.

                            Very cute photo.

What is this "smooth ride" in a CSR of which you speak? This is something I do not know.
