By the way, there are two other candidates for the Chairman position. They are Mike Ross and Scott Reed.

Stock Outboard is all about a level playing field.

True parity is one motor per class.

It's RACING, not just another boat ride!

NOT a representative of Racing Outboards LLC.

      Tj

I think TJ would put a lot of effort into the position. He has more experience than a lot of people in boat racing. He is also fairly common sense smart. I feel that is important in politics.

On the Kevlar stuff, why not leave it to the experts who know what they are talking about.......... ie- SRP, Lifeline.

Pass the popcorn guys, it is that time of year when the Stocks begin prepping for the Nat Meeting.

Eddie's thoughts on the new chairman.

After having done this for six years, here's a few of my thoughts.

Most important quality of the SO Chairman: MUST HAVE THICK SKIN! If you are into political correctness, if you get offended easily, or if you are an overall pansy, DO NOT APPLY! You will just get your feelings hurt and you will be calling your mom every night.

Seriously, though, one of the hardest things to do as chairman is to take a position that you know you need to take with the knowledge that it is going to piss some of your good friends off. When this happens, you still have to do what is right. This is not very easy and boatracers, like old ladies that get together for tea each month, get really pissy when they are upset.

Second most important quality: Must be able to set aside personal interests. This is particularly difficult for anyone who owns a lot of equipment or who can be considered someone who would be on our list of suppliers, etc. That is because many issues that come before the SORC involve changes that could phase out equipment or at least make it not as sought-after, or it can reduce work or change designs that such a person has a financial interest in protecting.

Case-in-point: when the issue came up about increasing the cc's on the Hot Rods, I knew that this would obsolete all of my good props (and it did); but it was better for the class because it took some of the high-end performance from the engine and reduced the frequency of piston-burning for everyone.

This is another very difficult thing to deal with but it is a reality in an organization run by members.

Good luck to the new Chairman, who ever it might be.

Thanks John ... but, how would we have otherwise known? I'm not aware that either Scott or Mike were 2007 SORC members so I'm guessing that they must have been recently elected from their Regions. But back to an earlier point ... a successful Chairman candidate is subject to the approval of the SORC and not the general membership. So, it is ultimately up to the membership in each region to let their respective SO Commissioners know who they would prefer to have serve as SORC Chair.

            Ross & Reed Experience.

Ross has been the SORC secretary for the last 3 years. Reed has served on the SORC in the past but did not serve the last two years. Reed is a member of the SO Steering Committee.

I respect any individual who is willing to actively participate in any volunteer organization and suspect that the credentials of any and all of the SORC members would qualify them for the Chairmanship.

The commission has the power to elect who ever they feel will do the best job, it does not have to be someone on the commission.

                    Ed:

What is the established protocol for SORC Chair nominations?

Is the election of the SORC Chair done by ballot or show of hands?

There is no protocol and no criteria for selection of the Chairman.

The Senior VP will set a conference call meeting after all of the Regions have elected their commissioners and, at this meeting, the SORC will elect the new chairman. This usually takes place in mid November.

So the current Chairman doesn't serve until a new Chairman is elected?

No protocol ... no nominations ... no criteria! Just a voice vote during a conference call. Don't want to overstate the obvious ... but, the procedure you outlined is outrageous! How does the Senior VP know who the candidates/nominees are ... oh wait there are no nominees so Mike Ross, Scott Reed, Tom Johnston have no forum for letting their interest in the Chairmanship be known unless they submit their name to the Senior VP? Yikes!

And not only that (according to don11w) the Chairman might not even be a member of the SORC.

Yeah right! But seriously ... wouldn't you agree that the procedure described by Ed is just a bit wacky?

I mean c'mon ... how hard is it to set up some semblance of a nominating process ... review credentials ... give the nominees a chance to be heard, do a little politicking, address the Region Chairman at the very least and then let the Commission give suitable consideration and then vote (preferably by ballot)?

Ok I figured I better post something as I am going to run for this thankless job Ed speaks of. I for one have been an apba member since 1975, I have been the one who has set the National meeting Agenda the last 3 yrs. As John Runne stated this is the big chore as a chairman. There are also issues going forward that the SORC will decide on. I was waiting to see who all the elected commisioners where before I started any kind of campaign. Just for the record myself and TJ are region 6 commisioners(elected last Sunday along with Jeff Brewster.) I know most of the commisioners who have served the last 3 years and feel they have confidence in my abilty to move the Stock Catagory forward. We have a plan(Thanks John Runne and committee)to follow going forward. I am planning to continue where Ed left off and as soon as the Sidewinder is up and running I think you will see the Stock numbers take off. These new motors are are future( Sidewinder & Tahatsu). Yamato is carring us currently and it looks like they will play a important part in the next several years to come. Maybe a debate on Y-Tube would be cool. I'm going to need a bunch of body guards. I am going to hire Gary Pond to search out some retired secret service agents for the one he calls BUDHA!!!! I hired Ed Hearn as my lawyer to handle any legal issues that arise because after the amount of terms he served as chairman, I know he has thick skin and "can handle the truth" . Anyway Hope to see you all soon In the MOTOR CITY. Owe ya looking to sign Kid Rock or Ted Nugent (motor city mad men)for the entertainment for the Hall of Champions. Ask your MOD or PRO buddys for some ear plugs and watch out for Rick Bird on the dance floor. SEE YA Mike
