I kept looking for coverage from Lakeland. The best I could do was Dan's site. Nothing anywhere else. He found newspaper articles. I think the idea of someone at the race site tweeting and sending emails, and info live is a great idea. It doesn't even have to be a paid person. A group of individuals who agree to VOLUNTEER their time (we are all vonlunteers) to send info to the media. We all like recognition. Send the vlunteer group a patch or mention them in the Propeller. Simple as that. We are spoiled in the USTS. We have Ray Rodda, Tim Small, and David Weaver giving play by play (after the race, but usually within a few hours after). Then we have Teri Ziemer and Jean Tennell sending pics right away. It is great. If I ever figured out what tweeting was I would tweet. (Us old people aren't the ones you want doing this. ) Brad K's tweets and info from Daytona was brilliant. We aren't NASCAR, but we could at least be Hot Wheels.

The wholesale company I work for has spent millions in the last few years on social media/web….We just had a trade show (1500 customer attended) and we asked our customers how many had facebook pages for their business, only 30% had them. I was shocked.

We shared the following with them trying to get them to understand the importance of it. We surveyed our customers while at the trade show and 41% of them had smart phones so you would think they would get it but.....

Dan I know you will know most of this, but I wanted to share it with others.

Facts as I found putting together information for our trade show…

        140 million tweets a day

158 Million hits on YouTube a month

        800 Million active users

In 60 seconds there are 80,000 post on facebook walls

80% of facebook users connect to brands

In 60 seconds there are 600 plus new video’s uploaded on YouTube

164 Million Adults of our 311 million US population use the internet

Discussions via Social media –sports are the second highest topics

So like you many of us get it. But it’s up to us to do it.

As for Brad at Daytona, don’t kid yourself. He was marketing himself. He understands it will get him more followers , sell more merchandise, help his sponsors, etc. I realize it simple to do but there was more to it than just sending a tweet, he’s a business man.
Great post Don you get it :-)

        Thanks

          Hydro racer TV

This old man has been fooling around boats & outboard racing for nearly 58 years now and it has always seemed to me that the majority of participants have been amateurs, usually on a small budget. Anything that causes an increased cost effects the budget which eventually will lead to attending fewer races or even dropping out of the sport. This includes memebership fees, saftey equipment upgrades, entry fees, boats, engines, props and travel costs. If the cost to provide instant coverage causes any of these items to increase in my opinion you have a good chance of forcing people out of the sport of outboard racing.

I have been a member of many volunteer organizations and no matter wether it is a sporting group, a professional group or a charity there are only a few people that do the work but I think the local organization putting on the event should have a volunteer in charge of publicity, before, during and after the event. Doing this may make the overseeing organization, APBA that increased notice of outboard racing.

This pointing of fingers at each other and blaming someone or some organization of not doing their job or not knowing what their job is also causing me indigestion, a creative suggestion would be much more acceptable then the rants I have been seeing lately.

The title "HYDRORACER TV" seems to imply they are a news or entertainment group and that someone from that organization should be covering an event if it is that important.

OK, got that out of my system!

            Point

Knee Jockey's are racing boats as a hobby. Once we get drivers sponsored and doing this full time, then come complain about why it is not mainstream media. Nobody wants to watch 14 hours of parades around a lake. Attention span on a boat racing You Tube video ? I race and it is only 2 - 3 minutes tops. Less classes, more competition, more different engines competing to create a brand war is needed. People relate to Ford vs Chevy. Same as people relate to Evinrude vs mercury. It really is a no brainer..... way to much time has been put into growing APBA. Way to much resources too. It is simple math, stop over thinking it.

Dan If I read between the lines of your posts I understand what you are trying to say. But I cannot get past the feeling that you are still upset that APBA didn't want to pay you for the job instead of Crown Partners.

Connie if we tweet do we become twits? haha

It’s useless with you older guys. Every post starts off with back in 1958 when I first joined this or that association. The same way you are sick of reading the post stating why something is not being done I am also sick of the old farts :-) Have fun and enjoy the golden years of your amateur racing careers. Paul Price mentioned in an earlier post that he was busy racing at Lakeland and had no time for texting and photos. He speaks of texting and posting photos to Facebook as if it is some type of pre adolescent activity design for young children and teenage girls only.

If you guys are truly that out of touch then it is truly hopeless.

                Have a safe summer

                Enjoy!

You guys need to wake up and do the same thing. Stop catering to the over the hill gang and reach out to the 20 something crowd by using the technology they use. A simple cell phone and a free Twitter account is all it takes.
Ok let me ask this.. Of the people (Boat Racers) that would take those pictures Dan where would their phones, cameras, computers be when they are helping with the boats in and out of the water. In their trailer or car that's where. I would not have my phone near the water at all. It would be safe inside the trailer till I was done with racing and even after that I would most likely be in a patrol boat or on the judges stand Volunteering so racing could continue and would not access it till the day is over.

All I have to say is if you like stomping on Crown all the time I would suggest that you take the initiative to go to all these racing sites to get all the footage your requesting and load them onto your own site and when a significant amount of followers are there show it to APBA. You might be able to show them that you are doing a better Job than Crown and be hired on.

From my view of being out of racing for 20 years and having been grown up to it I can see that Crown has started their process in a good way. There is no way that they can flip a switch to do everything, IT TAKES TIME!

I'll see if SRP can add a cell phone holder to my jacket so I can text and tweet from inside my boat next time I'm running. LOL

                        Craig,

I hear everyone loud and clear, all I’m saying is that at the very least APBA can hire some local kid from East Point, MI give him or her a small food, travel and hotel allowance. A very basic salary which would include a company cell phone used to post photos and commentary to Facebook and Twitter.

A better idea would be to scott out a few Freelance Journalists.

                            Hey Dan,

How about coming to some Region 4 SO-MOD-J races this year with your cell phone and Twitter account.

We would welcome your boots-on-the-ground support and resources to promote the sport!

It's a lot more fun than flaming from the keyboard...

I will be there Tom, the last few years have been tough on me family wise going through a rough divorce etc. Now that I have all that behind me you should see me texting away from a few Region 4 races :-)

Dan you are out of line with your flippin mouth!

You must have a real inferiority complex and the minute you have someone say something that you feel is against you there is your outrage spewing from your mouth. I was not challenging you to a duel but offering you some advice that some day may help you.
I may be over 70 years old but I am still connected with the latest gadgets available and still think like I did when I was 40 years old (but not over the hill). I created our Aeroliner web page on my own a few years ago, have the latest cell phone, the latest computer, have driven and still drive a Z06 Corvette for the 49 years, write engineering software that has been sold commercially and still find time to create reproduction parts for Mercury racing outboard as well as market them so others can keep racing and enjoying their 50 year old engines.

Just remember some day hopefully you will be part of the over the hill and back into diapers. LOL

Oh yes, everyday that I am vertical is a good day and I enjoy every one rebuilding 50 year old racing engines
