When Val got hurt in a T-Bone wreck in BSH at Millville and was in the hospital my personal insurance left us short and the APBA insurance kicked in and paid the difference with no hassle!!...............having that personal APBA insurance IS a important benefit of being a APBA member. Let's hope we don't lose that benefit.

This is a very important benefit. I have had to use it twice in 30 yrs. Once for my daughter slamming thumb in the motor home door, my insurance was supposed to pay everything but it got screwed up between the hospital and Insurance Co and I did not know about it. APBA was just watching it and picked up a $250 bill that was going to collection before I even was notified of it. APBA are the ones that notified me. The other was a trip in the meat wagon at Lock Haven and my insurance was not picking up the bill for the ambulance. APBA handled it again, no issues.

If the entry fees need to go up a little to cover this increase and if we as drivers have to step up and help with the risk management, it is a small price to pay.

A very small price to pay given the fact that a single night in the hospital for a "insured" person can run you any where between $1000 to $3000 for a single night depending on the services utilized during your stay.

This is a very sensitive topic that you don't think about until its your love one in the back of the rescue squad being rushed to the ER. I understand that many clubs are already operating in the red but this is one area you don't want to skimp on.

Best of luck and happy holidays :-)

Yep, K&K picked up the remaining bill from my operation last year (over $30,000) after my primary paid out................if we lost this coverage from APBA, I can GUARANTEE I would stop racing...........and sure as heck would not race in AOF with their "coverage"..........as they say "accidents do happen"..........

BTW, the biggest obstacle in my "claim" was improper paperwork filled out by the conducting club where my accident happened, so make sure you take the time to properly fill out ANY accident claims you have at a race..........

PS: I would rather pay an increase in my APBA membership for the rise in insurance costs than half the other crap they are spendy the money on now with Crowne.........

One thing that has always bothered me about APBA insurance requirements is the fact that most cities and counties where races are held have insurance to cover most anything. It is usually much better coverage than the APBA insurance. Regardless of what coverage may already exist for the site, you are still required to pay the APBA insurance in order to get a sanction.

Are you saying that their insurance coverage covers a boat racing event? If so please give an example?

At Present Cities are requesting to be Additionaly insured. If they must the cities only want to cover spectators , only as a secondary insurance after APBA's is maxed out.

APBA's insurance has been acceptable with Hartford Conn. so it is a good policy.

Expect this to get more difficult in the future, and more coverages asked for.

Most, if not all, cities and counties have liability insurance to cover any event that is held within their boundries.

Yes they do, but, why would they take the risk of insuring a RACING event and have their rates go up?

I had some crappy insurance in the 80's that wouldn't cover any injuries during any type of racing event.

Columbia Outboard's, CORA, premier event, Cullaby Lake wouldn't happen if we, APBA, didn't have at least ($500,000?) some coverage and named Clatsop County as one of the insured.

That would be like you letting a drunk friend drive your car because he has no insurance and you do, illogical.

Yep, My point. Why would a town, park etc. insure a event of any kind. They insure themselves sure. Never have we been allowed to have an event with out insurance.

Wonder if anyone got to call this guy (below) to look into other options?
Or; Rick, did you make a call to the Apba themselves?

I just heard rumor our "new" AsIs insurance went up for 2013....
