  • Life jacket certification

I've been told that APBA requires that life jackets be "re-certified" periodically. What is the rule on that?
I bought my jacket in August of 2000. Does it need to be "re-certified" to be APBA legal?

      Lifejacket Recertification

      Hi David,

The rule REQUIRING Lifejacket recertification every three years ago was repealed a few years back. Current APBA General Safety Rules state that the lifejacket must be built in compliance with "APBA Life Jacket Basic Manufacturing Specifications" dated April 8, 1991. Copies are available from APBA National Headquarters.

Beyond that, the only specific rule regarding lifejackets is that "Each Driver shall demonstrate that his lifejacket will function properly when requested by the referee". (APBA 2004 Rule Book, Rule 3-B, sub rules a-e, pages SR1-SR2).

If it's a Security Jacket or Lifeline made in 2000, its design should be in compliance with the basic manufacturing specifications. Beyond that, if it's only 4 years old and appears to be clean, free of tears, etc, it should be fine.

If it does need repair or cleaning, or you just want to get it recertified for some reason, Let me know.

      Thanks,

Along these lines, is there a rule in APBA that says the colour it must be? Or precentage of certain colour?

        Thx,

          Color

Yep, Rule B-c from above states:

"Color Requirements: all life jackets shall have at least 70% of the upper surfaces above the waist, both front and back, international orange or yellow in color."
