  • Did the local media recieve a press release for the winter nationals

Just wondering if the race committee sent out a press release to alert the local media that the APBA winter nationals would be in town this weekend.

So far I can’t find anything in the local press.

It is Alexandria LA......... is there a newspaper in Pineville or Alexandria ? There is a reason anyone can test there all week long, even the mods and pros. Perfect place to race for the louder faster race engines.

        Dave,

I just sent them a press release, they have a link on the site that allows you to send it directly from the web site. It might be to late but better late then not at all.

          Alex

Have raced at at Alex many times. Great place to race at .But if your looking for exposure it is the wrong place. If 50 spectators a day show up you will be lucky.

Thanks to Dan for taking the lead on this.

            Marketing 101

If this press release generates just 10 people to come see the event this year and they go home, each tell a friend and make a promise to attend next year, you get 30 spectators next year. The first 10, their 10 friends, plus 10 new ones from the 2nd year press release.

            Year 3 = 70 people
            Year 4 = 150 people
            Year 5 = 310 people
            Year 6 = 630 people
            Year 7 = 1270 people

We been racing at Alex for 30+ years. Most years with multiple events across multiple categories.

You know what happens in Alex after 30 years of basic promotion? You have another DePue with thousands and thousands of spectators.

Street parties, community involvement, new racers from that area, parades, pancake breakfasts, exposure of the sport, vendors, groupies, carnival rides for the kids, and sponsorships; are all possible.

It starts with a long term outlook and a marketing plan/strategy.

It takes 10 mins to make a press kit. The rewards are not measureable.

Again, a big "Thank you!" to Dan

what used to be with the "TOWN TALK"

In the 60's and 70's when the NOA World Championships for "Alky" used to be held at Fort Buhlow lake, Carl Rylee, who was a local resident of the Alexandria/Pineville area, was the driving force behind the promotion of the race, and as Referee also was the HMFIC at the race course. I once saw him start a heat of D Hydro NINE times, because he did not like the way the drivers were pushing the clock. His word was law, his drivers meetings ledgendary, and if you didn't like the way the race was run, you could go home, or not come to Alexandria to start with.

All that being said, Carl was also in the higherarchy at the local newspaper, the "TOWN TALK", and nothing happened at that race for a week before and several days afterwards that was not published in the paper, along with pictures of the action. In addition he sent a copy of the next two daily editions of the paper (Monday and Tuesday) after the race was over with to all the participants so they might have a hard copy of the results that were published for their scrapbooks, etc. After his retirement,(which coincided with the lack of World Championship races at Buhlow) his son, Doug Rylee took over the referee duties for several more years into the early 80's I believe.

All this was of course several generations ago, but the point is there is HISTORY of boat racing at Fort Buhlow lake, and that same type interest could possibly(?) be generated again. I am sure I remember that Carl passed away some years ago, although Doug might still be alive and living in the area. If anyone at the TOWN TALK remembers Carl, they know that at one time that the paper was a big booster of boat racing on that lake. Whether that could be revived or not, is another question entirely.

The newspaper and News Channel 5 have been out at the lake the past few days. I saw them interviewing Ed Hearn today as we were getting ready to race BMR. As far as press and advertismentis concerned. We have had races advertised on the radio (the race this year has been mentioned infact)/ TV...we even did on air interviews back in 2004 telling about boat racing and how it impacts our lives. It just doesnt work as well as it used to. We and the Guadagnolis have even taken our rigs to Tunks the Thursday before a race and set them up so people could come look and ask questions and what not on their way in and out of the food joint. My family and I just see it as the lake has been raced on soo much for so many years... its nothing new to teh people of this area. We had a decent crowd today. it wasnt huge... but lots of people stopping by to see what exactly we are doing. I am out of ideas as to how to possible brign the racing back to the hearts of the locals around here. Most of the key players from this area are no longer with us or have since moved away. Any help with ideas on how to help promote our sport better would be greatly appreciated. I would love to have some sort of local role in bring the sport back to life in one of the most needed lakes and historic lakes in the country.

                    Winternats on TV

The Winternationals were aired on the local NBC affiliate. Here is the link. The Winternats coverage starts at 4:15 on the timer. The records of Braxton Miller and Joel Kiddy are mentioned with a good shot of the Racecraft pits and the AMH race. Eddie.
