4. The 102 and 302 are pretty much the same. The 80 is only ran in the 20ssh class. You’ll here different opinions about which is better (102 vs 302). I personally prefer the 102. However, the 302 is probably easier on someone who is new. The ignition system in a 102 can be touchy. The 102 uses points while the 302 has an electronic system. Honestly, if it wasn’t for my dad who’s a mechanic, I’d have a 302. Dealing with the points every other race is a pain. If I were you, I’d go with a 302.
5. Merc vs Tohatsu – I think the Merc is till king. However, I feel like the potential of the Tohatsu has yet to be fulfilled. I only know of one guy running a Tohatsu runabout. It’s shown glimpses of dominance, but I just don’t think anyone has really dialed one in yet. You can probably get a merc for about ½ the price of a tohatsu. I’ll personally keep running my merc until a tohatsu consistently beats me. If I were in your shoe’s, I’d go with a merc.
