  • DAY TWO OF THE USTS NATIONALS AT DEPUE

Day two of the USTS Nationals with The Depue Men’s Club dawned with clouds and cool weather, good for horsepower. A great crowd again enjoyed some great racing
In CRR as Jack Campbell started a great day for himself as he started the day with 3 heat wins in the CRR as Jay Walls Sr. and Duke Johnson chased him for the title, but Jack was just setting the table as later in in CSH Jay and Justin Gibson chased him down in C Service Hydro as Jack doubled up in the USTS National Championships.

350H came up next and enough excitement in the first try to last a lifetime, as Gary Buskirk had another scary moment in the first turn as he did a few years ago. Gary came up for the start on the outside and started for the pin when chaos developed. Over he went and Gary tumbled and tumbled on the water and 2 other drivers fortunately took evasive actions and just missed him. The best part is that while sore, he was uninjured and was at the banquet last night.
Amy Nydahl had the field covered in the first two heats as the NCM entry was in top form with Amy driving beautifully. Her brother Kurtis was also in the mix and took the 3rd heat as Amy held back at the start to ensure points for that third heat. Jamie Nilsen, the defending champ, drove all the way back from Washington finished in the 2nd spot with Kurtis winning the second heat put enough points on the board for 3d.

175 Hydro was next and there was no doubt that Bob Cronin had the field covered, but Baylee Burkland was not going to be deined a heat win as she finished out front in the 3rd heat to take the 2nd spot overall to start a good day for the Burkland family. David Tenny of Connecticut was able to parlay good finishes for the other podium spot.

I don’t know if I ever saw what I did yesterday with Tim Small being passed on the outside for the lead. As JJ Walls broke out front in the first heat, they went to the bottom corner with Tim just behind JJ as they came through corner, JJ’s boat took a big hop and thought he was going over. Somehow he got it back on the water, didn’t load it up, and set sail for Tim as he got by JJ with the bobble. JJ biding his time came up on Tim’s outside and slowly pulled the lead away from Tim. JJ went on to post two wins and Mike Krier was cooking in that orange rocket and finished 2nd overall Tim Small finished in the 3rd spot

500R came up and Tim Small, Tim Small Tim Small. The two Cylinder Rossi was the class of the field as he took his second title of the weekend after winning the 125R class on Friday. Kurtis Nydahl had trouble in one of the heats, but was very fast and was knocking on the door as he And Brennan Burkland were 2nd and 3rd. That completed a great weekend for the Burkland Clan and it was a fun pit area to watch as high fives were shared all around. Great job Baylee and Brennan.

The last class of the day was of NO drama, but lots of speed as Amy Nydahl in that beautiful Pugh, Thirlby Automotive entry took the title to now give Amy 2 titles for the weekend. The fun was in the field, as David Mitchell, driving the Buttercup, an all yellow hydro owned by Tim Borway who took it to a 3rd place finish Friday in 500H, took the 2nd spot in this class. David had to open the capsule hatch while driving as the cockpit was steaming up on him and he was unable to see clearly without the fresh air. Nick Shakeshaft in his first year of capsules scored a podium finish as well.

A great day of racing and an even bigger crowd on the shores of Lake Depue with the Depue Men’s Club shelter doing land office business with the concessions and beer garden. What a great sponsor.
