  • HARM J Hydro Project: Weeks 5/6

At the end of 2005, we have ended 6 weeks of work on the J Hydro Project. Almost all the boats have bottoms on them, and some are sporting air traps and/or sponson sheers as well.

More guests and visitors come by every week. One of the fun things about this project is that as the news of it travels, people are coming out of the woodwork to see what’s going on. Two weeks ago, Ron Jones Sr came by to take a look, and offer some construction pointers to the young builders. I think he nailed it when he said “This is the Future of boat racing.” Last week, APBA J Class Co-Chair Ernie Dawe asked George Thornhill to stop in and check out the project. Thornhill is the PRO Category Rep on APBA’s J Class Committee. George took a number of pictures and had a big smile on his face when he left. You never know who's going to drop by next.

For me, I think the coolest thing I saw was the appearance of Zach Hagemann at the Week 6 session. Zach just completed his first full season as a J driver, and he heard that one of the new drivers, Jared Martin, didn’t live very far away from him. Zach and his dad Cass came down to the Museum to see the activity, and Zach quickly introduced himself to Jared, and before you knew it, the two kids were working side-by-side on Jared’s new boat. While we all know that one of the best things about boat racing is how racers are always willing to help a fellow competitor, it’s really special when you see it happening at this level. We must be doing something right with our kids

With Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve taking place on the next two Saturdays, we’ll be taking a two week break, and then hitting it hard and heavy in January.

In the meantime, here’s some pictures of the past couple of weeks. The entire album of all photos can be found at http://community.webshots.com/album/525343862rXgOyX
