  • A "Do-It-Yourself" Outboard

At Hill Marine we sell a lot of hunting props called weedless for Mud Motors. I was working with one manufacture and he told me he had a 14 foot John Boat going 31 MPH with his mud motor on it. His mud motor was a 15 HP four stroke.

I got to thinking, if he could go 31 on a "JOHN BOAT", I should be able to go 40 MPH. SO, I build my own motor...

    I Like It!!

Now I bet it won't be long until we see the "Swamp People" racing these things. You could use 'gators for turn buoys.

Having Adult A.D.D. That I Do Have

I'm already started on DIY stage two. This motor is a Harbor Freight motor modified by NR Racing. A Harbor Freight motor cost $129. NR racing adds heavy duty valve springs, racing flywheel, bigger carb and bigger exhaust pipe with silencer for $359 delivered.

This motor is 212 CC's. My new motor is 414 CC, from Harbor Freight, it cost $299 but comes with a two year guarantee and has electric starter included.

For the 414 DIY motor I'm using a Mark 58 tower and a double belt system, which I will explain later....

It is OK to think I'm crazy, I don't care. This is a Sorensen, Sit down C Hydro, the off road flag will make turns safer and gun jumpers easier to spot, as the flag will carry the boat's number.

              I'm Not A Pilot.....

But you can always tell a pilot, you just can't tell them much.

The good think WAS that I caught the prop rotation problem BEFORE I went to the lake.

Had I listened to your suggestion SOONER, I could have moved my pulleys back and my motor back.....But this is going to be fine.

The funny part about this FOUR STOKE is it actually sounds quite cool when running....

Did I mention I'm making a cowling for this motor, so I won't look like a lawm mower motor....

                    A "Do-It-Yourself" Outboard

These motors are being raced in AKRA (American Kart Racing Association) as the clone (Honda 200) class, they have kit motors for under $100.00 and lots of parts are available. They have three classes and are easy to tech., the stock class has about 8-9hp, the Super Stock Class has about 14.5 hp and the Modified class is around 20hp. The parts are super cheap, like $5.00 for rings, pistons are around $10.00 and the Super Stock cam is less than $50. I had a chance to race one this last winter in the AKRA Super Stock class, it ran all the time was easy to start and turned approx. 7500 rpms. Mostly it was very cheap and lots of fun.

Will the cowling over heat the motor??

Theres alot of U tube vids on this motor on how to modify it and take it apart. My generator has the same motor in it never had a problem with it.

A Foot Throttle Is In The Plans

Actually, I should say the foot throttle was on the plans, on my napkin.

The reason I have the Keller throttle, is because until I can get the boat on plane, with ease, I figure we may have to climb out on the deck like NORMAL kneelers.

To answer the question about the cowling: This mother is going to be so fast it can't over heat...but I do plan some louvers in the cowling.....forward facing on the inside, backward facing of the outside (Outside meaning the opposite of the throttle side, so water can't get in (easy anyway).

This NR Racing motor comes with a RACING FLYWHEEL, heavy duty valve springs, big carb, and exhaust silence for $359 delivered.

Please refrain from telling us anything about Go-Karts. Next thing you know they will be over here stealing our ideas......

On a serious note, Skeet: A APBA AXS Mercury costs $2,700, plus $1,200 FOR A GEARCASE, plus $500 for making it go fast. $4,400 FOR A MOTOR. We have four of them.

                              My goal, is a $1,000 Do-It-Yourself Outboard motor, like a Go-Kart
