Yamato 302 Issues

We have a 302 right now that will run on the beach fine, but as soon as we put a load on it the motor pops and farts and barely will get on plane. The motor did get wet 2 weekends ago but was run right after its bath and everything was dried out between races. Two different sets of spark plugs have come out of it black? The carb has been cleaned out, fresh gas, good compression and it still will not run!

Any thoughts????

Spark plugs being black usually indicates a rich setting on the needle valve. Jack

try resetting your clicks on the main jet down to zero. back it off to somewhere around 37 for starters. see if that helps any. may not be just the ticket but 36-37 is a good starting point to start tinkering. i run my 302 at 36 and 37 clicks and it does great. what plugs are you running? maybe youre running a "cold" plug and need to kick it up a notch? or are mixed a too rich?

One of the design flaws on the 302 is the inverted magneto. It works well but there is no provision in the casting for water to drain out. While you may have started it and run it, water can still remain in the housing and eventually seep past the top seal on the crankshaft. Most engine builders will drill some holes in the mag casting to allow water to drain. If your's doesn't have holes, this is an area I'd look at.
