  • Okoume??

I have been shopping around for Okoume plywood for the boats we are going to build and see there is BS1088 and BS6566.

Which one is preferred for race boats?

Also, Craig and Shannon have used some beautifully grained wood on decks and cowls. Any idea what that wood is called? I seem to remember something like Brunzil but not sure.

    Thanks

    Brunzeel

"Brunzeel" was the name of the company in Amsterdam, Holland that was a large exporter of Okume and other type woods to Harbor Sales and other wholesalers/retailers here in the US. That was back in the 70's and 80's and I have no idea whether they are even still in business now. The term "Brunzill" was probably used by folks who saw their name on packaging or something else and mistakenly thought that was the type of wood, rather than where the wood orginally came from when shipped into the US. There may have been others also in that same time frame, but they were the main ones supplying Harbor Sales with marine plywood suitable for racing boat construction, where a large amount of the wood came from that was sold to various racing boat builders here in the US.

      Chinese Plywood

I have used some chinese made plywood. I ordered it along with the french ply. I found the chinese ply to be very nice, with core ply's that looked like okoume where it looked like the more expensive french plywood used ?? for core ply's. Also, the face ply's looked nicer to me on the chinese ply.
Has anyone had a bad experience with the chinese ply from Noah's? I would like to hear about it, as I am getting ready to order some plywood. Thanks

I have researched the Chinese plywood on other boat building sites and the reviews seem about 50-50. Some hated it and some loved it.

I have been looking here http://www.clcboats.com/shop/product...e-plywood.html and their prices seem fair enough. I am waiting to hear back on shipping costs. The Sapele is beautiful but twice the cost and rumored to be heavier.

Russ we bought wood from All World Panel over in Riviera Beach, FL.

There is a difference between the 1088 and 6566 give Cronk a call he can tell you what that is. I forget exactly but 1 is better than the other or talk to Dad this weekend in Lake Alfred.

Also remember the more plys the better the wood, and they should also be roughly the same thickness on each ply, ie 5 mil 5 ply is better and stronger than 5 mil 3 ply.

            okoume

As already noted above here is the link to World Panel in West Palm Beach

            http://www.worldpanel.com/products.asp?cat=8&pg=2

I have used this companies ply in the 3 and 6mm and found it to be without voids and sound quality. I have tested some cut pieces in boiling water for over an hour without veneer separation. Call for shipping prices.

The essential difference between BS 1088 and BS 6566 is the condition of the face veneers. The 1088 is A/B grade free of knots except very small nice looking ones and there are no fillers used to fix surface blems. The 6566 is B/C grade and has some surface blems and matching color fillers are used to fix them but they are minimal. The 6566 standard does allow a slightly thinner face veneer compared to 1088. Both have no internal voids and they use WBP (weather & boil proof) glue standard that meets marine quality. I would get the 1088 however note that there is no BS 1088 Quality Standard Police out there so the seller is the reputable agent that provides the info. Some sellers stamp BS 1088 but don't really know the standard that was used some actually know.

Are you planning on boiling your boat when finished with it? or racing on TOP of the Wa Wa.... ?? Just wondering what would give a guy the Idea to boil some plywood on the wifey's stove Lol............ But did it make the room smell nice? kinda like a boat builders Potpourri - Hydro da Okoume ...Lol
ROFL Just checking the WBP spec to make sure it will not delaminate. Lot easier to do than to replace faulty plywood. I always do this with plywood because way back I had a bad experience with some supposidly marine grade that had inferior glue and delamination occured with normal use.

Insert a small dish size panel in your dishwasher when SWMBO isn't looking and run it thru with the dish load. Let dry and do it again. And again. If it survives three hot washes and dry cycles without going south it be good.

ps; -ask Sorenson what that ply was he put on Larrys Downs DSH deck. The Johnsons had that boat at C'L NY, and is still the most striking hydro I have ever seen.

The 'ribbon stripe' mahogany that Jones used in the 50s
is also great to look at.

Graphics are great on plastic boats. There is nothing more beautiful than wood grain smothered in clear varnish.

We are going to try to build something that incorporates things we like from various builders.

I had a Broccoli BSR when I was a teenager (many moons ago) and loved the ribbon stripes Craig put on the deck.

Check out each panel for top ply quality and look at the edges especially any 3mm ply and look for manufacturing stamp and bs 1088
