      C mod Mercs

We will have several running at Jesup in a week and a half. Dick Willard and Steve Dunn and maybe more will be running in CMH. Going to be a fun weekend and real good turn out of boats!

          C-Modified Merc vs Yamato overview:

There is a big difference between a 30-H Merc with all the "right" parts and an average 30-H. Those parts are getting very hard to find. With scarcity come expense. Modified legal Yamatos are basically stock with a pipe and one is very much like another, no machining or "special" parts required.

There are people that have raced this class for a very long time and race it well with a Mercury but a new racer has very little chance of competing with a Merc without some very specific knowledge and a fat wallet.

Right now I see tremendous parity with the best 30-H's and the best Yamatos, but I also see more upside to the Yamatos.

The lower cost of ownership and operation of the Yamatos allow for more dollars to be spent on props and boats. 40+ years of development and experimentation of the 30-H has the motor fully matured. Add a diminishing spare parts pool and it just becomes that much more difficult to compete well with a 30-H.

Many congratulations to the guys that race a 30-H well, the effort and knowledge required to do that is pretty incredible.

This is why we call it modified and not stock........ it allows those innovators a chance to show off talent and possibly win. It gives a lot more enjoyment and satisfaction to the individual who accompishes it. It also allows one to boat race 7 days a week. Working all winter to build an engine like that.. it is truly a blast. Parts are not that hard to find if you are one of those folks. If you are one who purchases your engines ready to go you would have a very hard time finding the parts. One who likes building already has connections. There is nothing wrong with buying your engines, nothing at all. Not meant to knock those that do. I am just indicating why those of us who do might do it.

Macafee has a pretty strong C Merc as well. Whoever bought Withims C merc will have a very good one as well.

What is the legal "C" mod merc gearfoot? Are the old Konig/yamato pro gear feet legal?
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most.

There is a long list of preferred parts for a 30-H. The manual "How to Modify your Mercury" which is available on e-bay, lists by part number the parts and pieces better than my poor memory can.

                  link to manual:

I have that book. I'll have to dig it out and refresh my memory about preferred parts. I remember that Harry liked steel Quincy pipes for Cs and Quincy reed cages for all Mercs. Don't remember anything else in particular.

Harry did a lot of the work to my C motor. Ruck bored it. Harry ported it, beveled the crank, cut the flywheel, built most of the exhaust system.... Great motor! I no longer have a C boat though.

Glad to see that there are still a few C Mercs running. McAfee was the only one I could think of and I'm not sure that he is still racing C.

Merc 30-H MOD engine just completed

Here is a photo of a 30-H MOD engine that was just completed. The parts are easy to find and can easily be made into a MOD engine. This engine was in the parts I bought from Harry Brimkman. It was lable #2 "C". The ports have been updated to the latest notes he had and the crank has a full Brinkman bevel job. The pipes are an old set of Hubbles so we will loose a little with them.

I've had both of mine for quite a while also. Do you have the first one Sam?
