  • 20H & Stock Classics at Top'O

    Gents,
The race committee for the 2008 Top 'O Michigan Marathon has decided that if we can get enough entries they would like to add Stock Classics to the APBA sanction. I encouraged them with the idea that a significant group of 40-60 year-old engines might be a great attraction for this years 60th anniversary race. What we envisioned for this introductory year of classic racing would be to run an "exhibition marathon". Two reasons: A shorter 20 minute course that passes through the community of Indian River and reverses at the Breakers Hotel on Mullet Lake to return to the start/finish line would allow first-timers (and old-timers) an opportunity to share in the spectacle of the marathon without having to make significant modifications to the typical short-course runabouts, extra fuel tanks, etc. Also, the timing of the starts of the various groups of marathoners, classics, and "J's" would keep racing in front of the spectators almost continuously for the duration of the marathon.
While there are a couple of local agencies that still must sign off on the idea, it is YOUR committment to join us for the first-ever Stock Classic marathon that will allow this to happen. You need only be a Stock or "Super" licenced APBA racer to enter. Stock Classic is a sub-category within the Stock Category. We would welcome competitors with KG-4, KG-7H, Mark 20H, Mark 30H and Mark 55H. All will compete within your own "class" based on cubic inches. This effort has been initiated on behalf of a bunch of us 20H racers but we want any and all to join us. To date we have 5 confirmed entrants (4 with Mark 20H's). We anticipate many more. Please add your name to the following: Mike Marshall, Jack Stotts, Ian Duggan, Austin Duggan, Steve Roskowski............ Call me for other details at cell 740-319-5040, Mike Marshall, Raceboat61-S

    Classics at Top 'O

    Mike,

I will be there for sure but probably running 25 again as I simply have to finish both days. That being said, my 20-H rig will be there as well, so if the right person were to come along, there will be a rig ready to pull the starter rope and go. That should eliminate the excuse that someone may have. I do have to say though that this is all contingent on me getting my new runabout done. Maybe I'll be in the 20-H myself.

For anyone on the fence about going to this race, don't think about it any more. You will love it. It is that simple.

Mike, have you ever flipped a runabout in front of that many spectators before? Maybe I should make your spray sheild a snorkel!

    Steve Roskowski

I'm wondering if the old B class will be running the converted 20H or the old gold & green version.

All classics will be welcome. The green/goldunconverted 20H would be competitive with any of the other 20 cubic inch mercs and would be in the "classic B" class. Steve, I, too will have a spare Racecraft for someone else to run. Still hoping to get Austin VanOver and Shaun Brill to join us ! Mike

GREAT ! Jesse, That's 5 Mk20H's already. I'll be running my old Rinker with my 20H. I bought this shell from one of the early molds from John & Jan Rinker. It was in 1965.....I framed in the cockpit and decked it myself. Always loved the boat and couldn't part with it. Have run it a couple of times with my 25XS....it's a handful with that engine but really loves the 20H. Stay in touch, we'll get more as the weeks get closer to the race. Mike

                Classics at Top O'!

WOW! This is really big news! The crowd is really in for a treat. I can just imagine the looks on their faces when a group of converted 20H's come growling up the Indian River!
What a great way to highlight the landmark event of the 60th annual Top O' Marathon. I look forward to seeing all the classic race engines.

                This is gonna be great!

Remind me once again of the date of this great event.
I assume in Classic classes we are resticted to runabouts?
                    A big, hairy old D cab-over would be 'ver-boten' , eh?
Its just that its hard to find runabout drivers these days.

yeah, sure, bring the cabover let me know how it goes over the fist set of four footers I believe it does state runabout classes only, but hey, if you want to try, just get ahold of the race comitte, they did run 45ss before the capsules came about

Mike, as you stated Ian and I will be there with two 20H's (one conversion, one stock). We can probably put together a KG4H or KG7H rig if another class needs boats. I can’t wait to hear multiple 20H conversions growling down the river!! It's going to be quite a site and quite a sound!!

Hmmm... I was planning on coming with an OMC A... I've never done a marathon before and figured the 60th was my reason to come. But a 20H... that sounds uber cool in more ways than one

How does this marathon work? Could I do ASR one day and Classic B the other? Or do you have to pick one class for the weekend?
