I am in the unfortunate position of having to pass on the sad announcement of the passing of Mr. Robert Lee Gray.
Mr. Gray was the last survivor of the Original International Cup Regatta.
Many of you know the Outlaw Family in Elizabeth City, NC. Leonard mans the Region 4 trailer and is married to Shirley who is the Official Scorer at many Region 4 events. Mr. Robert Lee Gray is Shirley's Father and L.Es. Grandfather. L.E. is the Commodore of Carolina Cup Regatta Inc.
Mr. Gray passed on a legacy and a love of Boat Racing and Building to L.E. . In this over 4 years ago, L.E. was so hooked that he and his Mother, Father and Wife Lauren founded Carolina Cup Regatta Inc. and brought the Thunder of Boat Racing back to the waters of the Pasquotank River in Elizabeth City, NC.
Just this year the club unanimously voted to change the name of our main annual event back to the "International Cup Regatta". This brought a big smile and many fond memories back to Mr. Gray. Without the Love of this sport being passed on by Mr. Gray to his family boat racing in Elizabeth City would be just a memory to some and not the event that has returned.
Thank you Mr. Gray and Thank you Outlaw Family for all your efforts, I am honored to know all of you and work with you in this endeavor.
May God Bless the Gray and Outlaw Families in this time of morning and may their memories bring them years of Happiness.
Bob & Mary Kaldahl, Carolina Cup Regatta Inc.
