Nikon D40
Check out the new Nikon D40 its the smallest DSLR on the market today so if you always thought a DSLR was to big and heavy you better think again!
The D40 will sell for $599 with a kit lens! this price point makes it cheaper then high end point and shoot compact models like the Canon G7.
Many of the guys here on HR Net will back me up when I say its not the camera but the photographer that really makes the shot. My point is first learn how to compose and take shots with a standard point and shoot because if you don't learn the basic theory of good photo taking the type of camera you own will be irrelevant.
