  • Special Award Given at Lake Depue Boat Races

    Historic Depue Race Award Accepted

For the first time ever, in the history of boat racing at Lake Depue, Illinois, a special award was present to Gene East, former Quincy Welding employee/mechanic/engine builder/welder, for his many contributions to the sport of outboard racing.

It was presented to Gene by world famous racing announcer, Ray Rodda.

For those who may not know Gene, he is the gentleman in the "Quincy yellow" t-shirt & straw hat.

The second photo of the gentleman in the black shirt holding the trophy, is Mark Hummelshein of Quincy, IL, another former Quincy Welding racing engine mechanic, who used his many talents and skills to create this unique, one-of-a-kind trophy. The trophy was made up of an original Quincy modified Mercury cylinder and one of 50 ever produced alcohol-type crankcases, designed specifically for Quincy Welding racing engines by Mercury in the 1950's.

Special thanks for the engine parts donations from Alan Van Weele, the current president of the NBRA, National Boat Racing Association.

    Regards,

    Paul A. Christner

Congratulation Gene, for those of you that don’t know what Gene did for the Quincy engine development, he developed & built the 2 into 1 exhaust systems on the deflector & looper engines. This award is long over due for his many contributions to the sport of outboard racing. Also for those who don’t know Mark, the award creator, is probably the best racing outboard mechanic living today!!! Thanks you both for everything!!!
