SANDERSON REPEATS ‘BOATNIK’ WIN VIA TIEBREAKER TO EARN 6 TH CUP

(Grants Pass, Or.) —Veteran racer Roger Sanderson of Hoopa, California piloted his (#B-200) hydroplane to back-to- back ‘Boatnik’ wins to claim the 59 th annual ‘Tom Rice Memorial’ whitewater race on the Rogue River Memorial Day in Grants Pass, Oregon.

Sanderson, 54, became the 7 th driver in (CORRA) Cal-Ore River Racers Association history to repeat Boatnik wins. Sanderson won Boatnik Titles in 1993, 1995, 1997, 2007, 2016, and this year.

Sanderson’s win was in jeopardy on segment-3 of the 2-lap/4- segment race from Riverside Park to Robertson Bridge when he encountered mechanical problems at the start of the third leg.

Jesse Reinhart of Grants Pass (#17), who finished second in the CORRA Points Championship and won two races on the tour in 2016, took the lead winning segment-3. Reinhart held a 1-point advantage heading to the final lap.

Sanderson took the lead on the 4 th leg and held off Reinhart for the win by virtue of a tiebreaker. Sanderson won the first two legs, and final leg. CORRA Rules state in the event of a tie, the winner of the final leg is declared the winner.

With the win, Sanderson collected $1,750 and becomes the 3rd winningest racer in Boatnik history behind Jeff Lewis who has won the race 10 times, and Don Burnison an 8 time winner.

Only 6 boats of the 19 entered finished the race due to mechanical problems. There were no crashes, or major injuries.
