  • Photos from the Cambridge, MD Triple Crown Championship

Things are HOT here in Cambridge, Maryland for the inboard Triple Crown Championships (Worlds, Nationals, Canadian). Lots of boats, RVs and people. I haven’t heard so many folks speaking French since my 11th grade French class.

Thursday is a test day only, but it has the feel of a race day. Since boats of the same class are going out to test together the orchestration of trailers, cranes, pit crews, boats and drivers is the same for a race. There are spectators here but I’m not sure they know it’s not a race day. Get five boats of the same class on the course testing and it looks like they’re racing!

    That's Why We Test

The heat never let up all day and neither did the testing. Towards the end of the day it was a lot of onesies and twosies going out. Some never made it out at all. "That's why we test", I overheard one crew chief say to a disappointed driver.

Fisheye Photos in this thread were shot with a Nikon D70 DSLR, Nikon 28-80mm lens, with an Opteka Super Wide Fisheye Lens .20x adapter. Other non-racing photos in this thread were shot using a Nikon D80 DSLR with a Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED lens.

Eliminations Friday and Saturday, Finals on Sunday

Racing starts as soon as the first heat of T boats are in the water. Multiple heats in multiple classes. Friday and Saturday are qualifying races with the winner take all on Sunday. The referee explained that they haven't positively decided on the number of boats they will allow in the finals on Sunday. It could be the legal class maximum, 8 - 12 boats, or less depending on course conditions and the racing they see Friday and Saturday. Off to shoot the races!

It Was STILL HOT in Cambridge Today

How HOT was it? It was so hot that snakes went swimming to cool off and boats burst into flames spontaneously!

                  Also see next post.

Photos in this series and other racing photos in this thread were shot with a Nikon D80 DSLR with a Nikon AF-S VR Zoom 200-400mm f/4G IF-ED lens with a 1.7x telephoto converter.

                      Still More Flames

                      Still More Flames

All said, it was a good day of racing. Only boats and egos were damaged, not people. More racing shots to follow tonight if I can re-hydrate quickly.

                        Shimmy Shane Update

                        Matt,

I'm walking over to the Shane's RV now. I'll get the info first hand...

                        Matt,

The Shane's say "hi". I was at the driver's meeting this morning and I thought his number was 10. I didn't know it but the flame photos I posted above are Jimmy and his GP. Stuart said Jimmy pulled the strap on the fire extinguisher system and the plastic broke in two. Jimmy is ok. I'm going back to show the Shane's the 112 photos I took.

                            New Feature at Cambridge

A new feature at Cambridge this year is the floating outhouse. In this photo a driver climbs back into his boat after making a "pit stop" during a race.

Wasn't it Cambridge where H. Rap Brown famously said "Burn Baby, Burn!" ??
